| This female purple martin is bringing insects back to the nesting compartment to feed its young. All of our Purple Martin Bird House Installations use the Supergourd which is made of polyethylene and stays much cooler than metal houses. In the northern states where it doesn't get as hot, this is an inexpensive material that works fine for raising young birds in. However, in the southern states (from Texas over to Florida), temperatures have been measured up to 138 degrees inside the aluminum houses, with around 40%-60% of the eggs being COOKED and never making it to the hatchling stage. Purple Martin Propagators is doing it's best to replace these aluminum houses with much better (and cooler) SuperGourds that allow more babies to fledge. |
