Female Purple Martin with Insects
This female purple martin is bringing back insects she caught while flying to feed her
young.  All of our Purple Martin Bird House Installations use the
PolyGourd which is
made of polyethylene and stays much cooler than metal houses.  In the northern
states where it doesn't get as hot, aluminum is an inexpensive material that works
fine for raising young birds in.  However, in the southern states (from Texas over to
Florida), temperatures have been measured up to 138 degrees inside the aluminum
houses, with around
40%-60% of the eggs being COOKED and never even hatching.
The other problem with the "Condominium Style" multi-level purple martin houses is
that the compartments are usually 6" X 6" square (36 square inches of floor space)
which only allow the females to lay 3-4 eggs a year instead of the usual 7-8 eggs they
had been laying in the larger gourds (80-100 square inches of floor space). Here at
Purple Martin Propagators we are doing our best to replace these aluminum houses
with much larger and cooler
PolyGourds that allow more babies to fledge every year.

showing purple martin eggs laying on a bed of green leaves and
small twigs and branches the birds bring in for nesting material.
Our Bat Conservation International Certified BAT TOWER is much
better than the traditional wooden bat houses being sold in stores.
Individual bat species are part of the family called chiroptera.
